Two years of inactivity

After two years of inactivity I'll try to start this blog up again. Let's see...

Shell boss 'fears for the planet'

BBC NEWS | UK | Shell boss 'fears for the planet'

In an interview with the Guardian some months ago the head of Shell has said unless carbon dioxide emissions are dealt with he sees "very little hope for the world".
He fears that time is our worst enemy here. We will simply not have enough to come up with solutions that will tackle the problem of CO2 emissions.
If even he fears so, I slightly start panicking...

My son breakdancing

Aiko

My son just published some pictures of him practicing his breakdance (in our house). He's 9 and he started a year ago in the Willebroek crew: every week 2 hours of breakdance lessons by Mohammed and Tibor. Yo, man!

The last supper

Being interested in food, some years ago I saw a website with all the last meals that were served to people before execution in Texas. When I looked it up again, I saw the page was removed. Some other site recovered the information.
Strange to see also that one person also made a collection of photographs of these meals.
And even stranger that all were refused a last cigarette - due to the banning of cigarettes in prison (health risk???)

Top product: Teisseire Juice Ethno Bar Maroc

Another top product I want to bring to your attention is Teisseire Juice Ethno Bar Maroc.
A subtle touch of fig and coriander makes this orange juice to be one of my personal favorites.

Top product: Dr Oetker Pizza

From time to time I will post a product that got my special appreciation.
Today this is the range of pizza's of Dr Oetker. As an example I choose Pizza Ristorante Pollo.

I think these pizza's are by far the best available: they taste really great and their price is very reasonable.

Armed forces recognise first ever Satanist

Armed forces recognise first ever Satanist

I think this is rather funny. I heard on television it allready created some fierce reactions...

Thank you, George W

The dollar fell to a record low against the euro on Friday, with analysts forecasting more declines to come.
Later this year I'll need dollars for my holiday in Guatemala.
So thank you, George W, for bringing your country every day a bit closer to bankruptcy and bringing the dollar down.
And thank you, Americans, for rewarding him therefor by reelecting him!

Recipes: Soups

I once did a 3 year course in gastronomic cuisine and got a degree that allows me to open a restaurant or work in one as a chef. I never meant it to make my profession, and it stayed a hobby eversince.

Today I experimented in the kitchen. Amongst others I made 2 soups of whom I'll give the recipe here. I got them from a cookbook so I really don't get credit for them.

I'll be posting recipes regularly. If there's a recipe I liked, I'll publish it. I use a descipription as short as possible and metric measurements. If you have questions about ingredients or the preparation, just ask!

Courgette (=zucchini) soup with mascarpone
Let 1 onion (in small cubes) simmer for 5' in some oil.
Add 3 courgettes in cubes. Let simmer another 5'.
Add 1 l of chicken stock. Let simmer 20'.
Add 80 g of mascarpone.
Mix.
Add 2 tbs of green pesto, pepper and salt.
Finish with some freshly chopped basil leafs.

Carrot and honey soup
Let 1 onion (in small cubes) simmer in 2 tbs of butter.
Add 600 g of carrots in cubes.
Add 80 cl of vegetable stock. Simmer for 30'.
Mix.
Add 20 cl of cream, 1 1/2 tbs of honey (fluid) and 1 1/2 tbs of lemonjuice, salt and black pepper.
Finish with chopped parsley.
Serve hot or cold.

Image manipulation

As you might have seen, I did some minor retouching of my own picture. If you ever tried it you probably know how hard it is to get a decent result. Great is my admiration for people who can manipulate images like they wish. See what this guy does with animals on his website HumanDescent.

Oblivion

My niece is the lead sing and guitarist in a band called Oblivion. They just recorded a demo and one track 'Miss Red Error' is now on their website.
All band members are relatively young (15-16 y) so I think they did really great with this first recording.

In music I have several elements that can contribute to my personal appreciation:
minor chords, female singer (even better: male-female alternating), hard guitars, spanish lyrics, politically engaged content.
Though it doesn't contain all elements, it still contains some. And thus I like it, even if it is far from being technically perfect.
